Gates are usually low enough to see over them. Sometimes we like what we see on the other side and sometimes we are not so sure we like what we see. Often it doesn't look any different on the other side than where we are standing. Many times it isn't clear enough to see very far in the distance, so we aren't sure what we will find after we enter the new place.
Sometimes the gate swings open easily and we run through it, anxious to move ahead. We may be trying to get away from where we are, hoping things will be better on the other side.
Sometimes the gate is hard to find when it and the fence are overgrown with vines and bushes. In the book, The Secret Garden, the child longs to get inside the garden, but she cannot find the entrance. In many ways our hidden self is like a secret garden. We have beauty and potential for growth, but we don't know how to reach it. It may be that someone who believes in us can help us find our way inside. Rarely do we grow on our own. Often teachers see potential in us that we don't recognize. They show us the gate and sometimes help us to open it.
A gate somewhere to be found
Even after looking all around.
An angel as a stranger
Points the way with a finger.
A gate is seen intriguing
But closer then foreboding.
An anxious push inside
Become discoveries to realize.
